Blogging is not only a great hobby but also a huge opportunity for income generation via advertisement, affiliate product marketing etc. WordPress is the World’s leading Blogging Platform and HostGator, undoubtedly, is the Best Hosting Service to run your Blog. In this tutorial, let us see How to make your blog on HostGator in less than 10 minutes!
THREE Steps to Create Your Blog on HostGator
Creating a blog is no rocket science and you can get started with your blogging on Hostgator today itself if you wish to do so. Here are the step-by-step and screen by screen instructions to become a Proud Blog owner today!
STEP 1: Register Your Domain Name
The very first step in creating your blog is to pick its identity or the Domain name. For example, if your name is Amy and you want to start a blog on Food and cooking, the following domain names may be good for you.
Note: A .COM domain name is better than .NET or .ORG for anything else. Also, avoid names with dashes in them. E.g. amy-food-blog.com is not recommended
Please note that, you always have the option to Register your Domain name and Hosting Account separately with different vendors (e.g. NameCheap.com for domain name registration and HostGator.com for hosting). Fortunately, HostGator provides an easy way to do both these steps together and hence you can move to STEP 2 now after deciding on a domain name for your blog.
STEP 2: Choosing HostGator Hosting & Domain Name Together
Let us see how to register a domain name and a hosting account together via HostGator (Yes, HostGator just simplified the life for you and got rid of STEP 1).
You will now see the following screen in a new browser window.
Click the relevant ORDER NOW button to proceed to the next screen.
Note: Hatchling Plan is ideal for beginners who want to create only one domain name and blog under HostGator. Please read below to see How YOU CAN EXPERIMENT WITH HOSTGATOR ABSOLUTELY FREE FOR A MONTH!
In the following screen, enter the domain name that you decided from STEP 1 without the .COM extension.
If the domain name of your choice is available for registration, you will see a confirmation immediately. Otherwise, choose a different domain name and scroll to the next section in the same screen as given below.
In the above screen you have to choose your billing cycle , a Username and PIN number to manage your account, and payment information. Please note that if you choose a longer term (i.e. 3 years) you get the best deal but increase your upfront investment. If you are in doubt, choose 6 months or 1 year cycle.
Moving on to the next section on the same screen…
IMPORTANT: Do not forget to uncheck all the options in the next section (as shown above). Otherwise, you will end up being over-billed. Basic hosting is very cheap but not with all their Hosting addons . We don’t really need these addons.
Here is where we offer you HUGE discounts in terms of the HostGator Coupon from us. You may enter our Max Discount Coupon code HOSTGATORLOGIN25 and ‘Validate’ the same immediately to get an INSTANT 25% off on your bill. Please remember to change the default low value coupon (e.g. SPRING, SNAPPY etc) to our coupon to reflect the Best possible Discount.
Note: HostGator provides you the opportunity to experiment with their Blog Hosting services for JUST 1 CENT for the First month. Use the Coupon Code WORDPRESS and billing cycle as 1 Month in the above screen(s) to effect the First month free option
Once you have applied the coupon and agreed to terms and conditions, you may click the ‘CREATE ACCOUNT’ button to complete your HostGator hosting account creation process.
Congratulations! You are now the proud owner of a domain name and premium affordable hosting space to build your blog. You would have also received a Welcome mail from HostGator in your Email box.
You haven’t created the blog yet and that’s what STEP 3 is all about.
STEP 3: Install your Blog i.e. Install WordPress on HostGator
Now that you have a domain name and web space to host your blog, it is time to setup your blog based on the WordPress platform. By the way, HostGator support team can help you with installing your blog for FREE if you don’t want to do it yourself. But then, doing it yourself is more thrilling, right? After all, it’s not that difficult either!
To log into your HostGator account, please refer to the Welcome mail from the HostGator team.
Note: If you don’t find one, check your spam folder. If you still don’t find one, contact the support team
Login to the cPanel using the information in your Welcome email (Further reading on logging into HostGator cPanel here)
You will be seeing the following screen now which is the HostGator cPanel or control panel home. You can do anything about your domain name and website from this cPanel. For example, adding email addresses for your domain (e.g. firstname.lastname@example.org), uploading/downloading files, installing applications such as WordPress etc.
IMPORTANT: At this point, if you have taken a multiple domain hosting package (i.e. anything other than Hatchling package), you may have to add an Addon Domain to your account using the following section in the cPanel. You can skip this step as AmysFoodBlog.com is your only domain.
Coming back to installing WordPress… On your cPanel, scroll down to a section by name ‘Software/Services’ and CLICK the ‘QuickInstall’ icon as shown in the picture below.
In the QuickInstall screen, click on ‘WordPress‘ from the Left navigation bar.
Further, Click on the ‘Continue‘ button on the screen.
In the next screen, Fill in all details such as your preferred Email Address to receive WordPress alerts, WordPress Admin Name (that you want to login to your blog admin area with) and other details and Click the ‘Install Now’ button (refer to the picture below).
For a few seconds, your installation progress will be shown and at the end of it the following message is shown indicating the Successful installation of your First blog on HostGator! You will also receive an Email (at the address provided during installation) providing the details of Your New WordPress Installation.
So far so good! There’s ONE LAST THING that you have to do now to access http://amysfoodblog.com and your blog administration area http://amysfoodblog.com/wp-admin and the following sub-section completes that part.
LAST STEP: Updating Domain Name Servers (DNS)
This may sound complicated but it’s ridiculously SIMPLE to do.
DNS Server Names are two IP addresses that has been provided to you in your HostGator Welcome Mail. They are called Primary DNS and Secondary DNS addresses. They would be something like the following (usually two sequenced server numbers)
You have to enter these two addresses (i.e. the one in your Welcome Email) in your domain records to make sure that when someone types in http://amysfoodblog.com in their browser window, they are taken to your blog that you just installed on your HostGator account space.
Here’s how you can update DNS entries for your new domain. (Please note that, if you don’t want to do this yourself, the HostGator support will do it for you for free if you contact them)
Go back to your cPanel using the ‘Back to cPanel‘ Option on your last screen (QuickInstall screen) or login to cPanel afresh.
Scroll down to the ‘HostGator Links‘ section and click on the ‘Domain Management‘ icon.
In the new browser window resulted, click on the ‘Manage Domains’ link and log in using your HostGator account email address and password (as mentioned in the Welcome Email during signup)
All domain names that you own are listed in the screen after login. Click on ‘AmysFoodBlog.com’ and the domain details are shown on a in-page popup.
Click on the ‘Name Servers’ option on the left and you will be shown the following screen.
By default, there will be ns1.hostgator.com and ns2.hostgator.com mentioned there. Replace these entries with the Primary and Secondary DNS servers allocated to you and click on the ‘Save Name Servers’ button.
That is all! That took roughly 10 minutes OWN your First Blog (i.e. WordPress on HostGator) !
Please allow a few hours before a process called ‘DNS replication’ takes place and once that’s done, you will be able to manage and access your blog!
